This Queen’s speech shows the Coalition Government has no real vision for the country’s future.  The programme is certainly thin in legislative terms and much has been made of that but it is not just a question of quantity. Every Government needs a reason to be in power, a driving vision of where it wants to take the country. This Government does not have such a vision. The legislative programme in the Queen’s Speech, such as it is, is a collection of measures with nothing holding it together. The truth is if it wasn’t for the fact that the Government passed a law guaranteeing a five year term now would be the time to have an election. The Coalition has run its course. This Queen’s Speech shows that the main issues affecting the country’s future -; the economic recovery and whether it will be one for all or just for a few, the Scottish independence referendum and the future existence of the UK, and Britain’s relationship with the EU and the wider world -; are all taking place and being debated outside of the Government’s legislative programme.
