Last week, in a short sighted and vindictive act, the Government announced it would scrap the Union Learning Fund. This excellent programme helps 200,000 workers a year – union members and non-union members alike – to improve their skills. It costs just £12m a year and represents good value for money. Not surprisingly, the programme has strong support from employers too. Scrapping it is a retrograde move and it comes at the very moment when we need to help people with training and retraining more than ever. The suspicion has to be that the only crime this programme has committed is having the word “union” in its title. The TUC have launched a petition to save union learning.
