As we learnt yesterday that the NHS is “haemorrhaging” nurses with one in 10 now leaving the NHS in England each year, figures show. 

More than 33,000 walked away last year, piling pressure on understaffed hospitals and community services.

The figures represent a rise of 20% since 2012-13, and mean there are now more leavers than joiners. Nurse leaders said it was a “dangerous and downward spiral”.

Following this news, Pat McFadden MP (Wolverhampton South East) has called on the Government, once again, to fund the NHS properly as it sinks further in to crisis. In the video below, Pat says;

“Seventy years ago the post-war Labour Government founded the National Health Service, we did that because we wanted people to have access to healthcare without having to worry about the cost. This winter the NHS is in crisis, recently at a local hospital here in Wolverhampton twenty-five percent of patients in ambulances were waiting more than half an hour before they could get admitted to A&E and that figure was even higher at some other hospitals. The Government has announced the cancellation of tens of thousands of non urgent operations for this month and billions have been taken out of the social care budget in recent years. I pay tribute to the National Health Service staff, I think they do a heroic job doing their best to look after patients but they are too stretched and the system is not funded properly, so I’m calling on the Government to fund the National Health Service properly both on the health side and on the social care side because these two things are closely linked. It took a Labour Government to found the NHS and a Labour Government to rescue it the last time it was in trouble. I’m calling on this Government to step up and fund our National Health Service properly.”
