For many of my constituents, this is a very significant anniversary for reasons not do do with 1944 but 1984. For this weekend marks the 30th anniversary of Operation Bluestar, the invasion of the Golden Temple in Amritsar.

This event and the wider events of 1984 resulted in the deaths of many innocent Sikhs, killed not because of what they had done but because of the faith they held. It caused lasting pain and grief in the Sikh community here in the UK and throughout the world. And it caused a rupture in the relationship between many Sikhs and India which has never fully healed.

Many of my constituents will be remembering this weekend lives cut short, often in the cruellest manner, in 1984. Widows who lived lives without husbands, children growing up without a father. The grief continues, as does a desire for proper justice in terms of the telling of the full truth of these events and accountability for those responsible for them.
